The Walter Perry Award for Social Science

Walter Perry

Walter Laing McDonald Perry, Baron Perry of Walton from Dundee Scotland 1921–2003. Walter was a distinguished academic. He was the first Vice Chancellor of the Open University 1969-1979 and worked to make the Open University into an effective University that would not compromise on academic standards.

Jean McAvoy

. The Walter Perry AOUG  Award  for the faculty of Social Science , was awarded to Jean McAvoy.  Jean was the 7th recipient of this award and she was introduced by Dr Martin Le Voi.  Dr Margaret Wetherall director of the ESRC Identities and Social Action program from the Social Sciences faculty of the Open University states that Jean is one of the best students I have supervised  and a testament to the special qualities of Open University students and their perseverance.
Jean has a truly outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate record with the OU and has obtained distinctions in every subject she has studied with one exception. She has a diploma in Psychology , BSc in Psychology with (1st class Hons) and MSc in psychological research methods with distinctions. Jeans research is on midlife women and constructions of success and failure.
