2023 Research Awards

The Annual AOUG Research Award Ceremony was held on OU campus on October 6th 2023, when three final year research students were presented with their Awards in front of an audience of AOUG members, OU staff and their friends and families. The ceremony was opened by AOUG Vice-Chairman Jean Hertzog and first to be presented was Adam McMaster. Adam McMaster’s research on ‘Variable stars in the SuperWASP All-Sky Survey’ was nominated for the AOUG Vice-Chancellor John Horlock Award for Science and was introduced by his supervisor Dr High Dickinson before he received his framed certificate from AOUG Treasurer Margaret Stobirski.

Next was supervisor Dr Felicity Fletcher-Campbell introducing Kathy Thompson who she had nominated for the AOUG Vice-Chancellor Sir John Daniel Award for Education and Language Studies with her research into some children’s issues when transitioning from Junior School to Secondary School. Kathy then received her Award from Margaret Stobirski.

Then finally one of Samantha Veck’s supervisors, Dr Foroogh Hosseinzadeh, introduced Samantha’s work on stresses in materials created during the manufacturing process. Samantha had been nominated by Dr Hosseinzadeh and Dr Ho Kim for the AOUG Will Swann Award for Innovation and Knowledge Development and once again the presentation of the Award was made by Margaret Stobirski.

At the end of the proceddings, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kevin Shakesheff spoke of his pleasure to be at the Ceremony and to see the OU research students work given peer recognition of other OU graduates through our Association. He praised the work of the Association and expressed his desire to help to enable greater recognition of our future ceremonies.
