Degree Ceremonies
AOUG are honoured to send members to Degree Ceremonies to be part of the academic procession. Application forms are usually sent out as an insert in the Winter OMEGA but AOUG Graduate Members can also apply via info@aoug.org
The later Ceremonies will be advertised in the body of Spring or Summer OMEGA and here or in Local Newsletters. You will need to choose which venue you would like to volunteer for and in some cases there are more than one ceremony, so you will need to be available to attend both ceremonies when this is the case.
The form asks you if you are fit and able to fulfil the duties and this applies to being able to stand for up to fifteen minutes in a foyer or corridor outside the hall and then walk slowly in time with the others in the procession. Some venues have steps up to the stage where the procession members will sit and a few of these do not have handrails by the steps.
For the procession you will wear a gown with hood that represents the highest OU degree that you have achieved. As you are representing AOUG, we only wear gowns relating to the OU so even if you have a higher degree from another university, please just tell us about you OU qualification. The OU also request the year that you gained this qualification so that they can verify your information. The OU will then order you the required gown and so you are asked for your height to get the correct length for you. (This needs to be in feet and inches as that is how the gowns are labelled.) If you have already have an OU gown and hood of your own, we will not order a gown for you and so you will not need to tell us your height.
Once you have applied, our Chairman will let you know if you have been selected and send you the necessary extra OU form to complete and then nearer the date of the ceremony you will receive all the information you need for the day.
AOUG members wishing more information can contact the AOUG Office using info@aoug@org’uk

Association of Open University Graduates
All full Graduate Members of AOUG, whether long standing or very new, are encouraged to volunteer on a self funding basis. All names will be considered and then the AOUG Officers will compile their final list which will be submitted to the OU. The OU will then contact the chosen processors regarding the plans for the day.
