A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
The story revolves around the ‘down fall’ of Count Alexander Rostov. His guilt was simply that he wrote a poem which was questioning where things had gone wrong and was seen by the new regime of 1922 in Moscow, as not acceptable. His punishment was to reside in the Hotel Metropol for the rest of his life and never to set foot outside again. So begins the tale of how a once aristocrat, with a permanent family suite in the hotel, becomes one of the staff with his accommodation in the attic, a place for the lowest servant.
We are entertained with an amusing description of how the Count adjusts to this new life. He quietly removes some of the family furniture from its suite, up to the attic and manages to extend his new accommodation into the next room to his own by creating a door between the two rooms. Luxury! Some habits never change and his weekly visit to the hotel barber is just one of them. Like all good stories this one develops into other areas and carries the reader along the journey. A very good read.
