It’s a Wonderful Life.

The original film ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ was produced in 1946. It is a feel-good moral story which tells of the life of George Bailey, a kind and selfless man whose lifelong dreams of travel and success are repeatedly sacrificed so he can support his family and serve his hometown of Bedford Falls. It starts with a starry sky and an apprentice angel being dispatched from heaven called Clarence whose mission is to stick by George and help when necessary. A real guardian angel. Sounds corny but it really works I feel.

George is the director of a small loan company who ensures that the poorer working-class people in the town can get a home. There is a cruel rival called Henry Potter who does not care for others and is just profit motivated. One Christmas Eve things really come to a head and there is a financial crisis at the loan company.  George feels that everything he has done has not come to anything and that he would be better off dead.  So, he jumps off a bridge.  The angel intervenes and indicates what life in the town would be like if George had never lived and shown his acts of kindness. It is a harsh reality where money and power rule and the top dog is Heny Potter.

An early example of the ‘butterfly effect.’

He realises that life is not measured in material wealth or material success. It can be measured in the acts of kindness and sacrifice that an ordinary person can show. Then the angel gives George a second chance to make a difference and he realises that it is truly ‘A Wonderful Life.’
